steered by the stars just given away by the setting sun

Explanation:

neutral  Robert Forstag: I'm having trouble understanding how stars can steer and how the sun can give away stars, even in a poetic sense....

guided by the stars newly/freshly revealed/unmasked/unveiled/disclosed by the setting of the sun

Explanation:
unmasked, revealed, and disclosed all have the additional sense of 'being given away'. Take your pick!

Strictly speaking, neither 'sunset' nor the 'setting sun' work, since it is not the sun itself but its disappearance that causes the stars to be revealed.

-> thanks, Mike. There was a purpose in avoiding 'the setting sun' , and I opted for the rhythm of 'the setting of the sun'
