He hojeado en google y parece que sí se utiliza más para decir lejos. Sin embargo sigo creyendo q es mejor no mojarse...

Hasta donde yo llego, se trata justamente de un modo de no definir una distancia, así que en el apuro yo lo traduciría con la misma ambigüedad... raro que el resto de contexto no permita saber a qué se refiere.
