Maar in een van de drie dikke pillen waaruit mijn exemplaar van Webster's 3rd New International Dictionary bestaat vind ik voor 'stool' ondermeer: 5a: the flat piece corresponding to the sill of a door against which a window shuts; 6a: a small channel on the side of a ship for the deadeyes of the backstays; 6b: a foundation of plates or angles for any auxiliary machinery, piping, or shafting of a ship. Gezien de context van jouw stuk, en de onderstaande verwijzing naar stool space krijg ik de indruk dat definitie 6b hier wel eens van toepassing zou kunnen zijn.
