This is for a general audience with little knowledge of things Russian, so I don't want to use the 'English' word 'zakuska'. Which leaves me at a loss for an elegant expression.

I don't think "grub and bub" sounds MUCH more colloquial than the given expression. It IS colloquial as well - the whole phrase I mean, even though, taken separately, the words may sound quite neutral.
