French term or phrase: retenu (here)
Le village a ete **retenu** comme site touristique majeure de la region.

Is this just "listed" or "classed" in a similar way to a village being chosen as "one of the most beautiful villages of France"?

All your comments were really helpful, and gave me lots of food for thought. I decided on "accepted", as I think it covers both Ingeborg's "chosen" and Mark's "has become" neatly, without being as specific as some of the other answers, given the lack of context.

Explanation:
I find 'to adopt' is often a very useful solution for 'retenir'

chosen as one of the most beautiful villages

Explanation:
you had the right idea. I gather from the little context that this is praised a s the most beautiful site....

designated

Explanation:
I think chosen and selected are both fine, 'designated' is just another option:

some tourism related examples:
Pont de Quebec: This bridge was designated as an international historical monument by the Canadian Society...
Nara: an old city, designated by World Heritage as a historical asset

neutral  Mark Nathan: this is my point - you can designate something a national monument but you cannot designate it a major tourist attraction.
31 mins
-> I do take your point, unless the city was 'chosen' by a tourism board/local govt as a target for marketing materials

agree  Tom Bishop: Despite what Mark says, people and more particularly organisations designate things as anything they like. ;-)

-> Thanks Tom, I think Mark has a point however.

disagree  Sandra C.: I agree with Mark here.

-> Thank you Sandra, I agree he has raised a valid point.

neutral  Tony M: I am rather inclined to agree with Mark and Sandra on this one; "designated for development as..." perhaps, but...

has become/is

Explanation:
Before anyone jumps on me, I do realize that, in practice, retenu means in this context that the village is listed/presented as a major tourist attraction.
However, in tourism literature one usually presents a site on its own merits. To suggest that it was somehow chosen, selected (or even adopted - sorry Tony) by the tourist authorities, even is this is the case, strikes a slightly false note (assuming this text is a reccommendation of where to go, rather than an exposure of corruption in the tourism industry).
"The village has become/is one of the region's major tourist attractions."

A village can of course win an award, or be selected for a category ("village of charm" etc) but that is not the same as being a major tourist attraction.

agree  roneill: This sounds most natural in English

disagree  Tom Bishop: Idon't think we have enough context to be certain here, but tourist authorities etc. are perfectly capable of designating attractions; "a été retenu" certainly implies a deliberate action rather than some form of general consensus arising over time.
1 hr
-> Surely it would be weird to say that the Eiffel tower has been designated a major tourist attraction.
