Muitas coisas foram comoventes e interessantes naquele avivamento, em muitos aspectos. Ele aconteceu em meio a uma população que nunca tivera a concepção de avivamentos religiosos. Os alemães achavam que haviam-se tornado cristãos pelo batismo, e especialmente por receberem a comunhão. Quase todos, haviam sido questionados sobre quando haviam-se convertido, responderam que haviam recebido a comunhão em tal época, pelo Dr. B ou algum outro mestre de religião. Quando eu perguntava se eles achavam que aquilo era religião, respondiam que sim, achavam que era. De fato essa era a idéia do próprio Dr. M. Ao caminhar com ele para a sepultura do Dr. Greer, por ocasião de seu funeral, ele me disse que fizera seiscentos cristãos pelo batismo, e dando-lhes a comunhão, desde que tornara-se pastor daquela igreja. Ele parecia não ter outra idéia de tornar-se um cristão a não ser simplesmente por aprender o catecismo, ser batizado e participar da comunhão.
