microchannel plates
Explanation:
Going by how the term you're looking for sounds when pronounced rather than by its spelling (since I sometimes talk to myself when totally puzzled...), I went looking for "Mikrokanäle", which led me to "microchannel plates" and even a "microchannel x-ray detector". Would be a rather gross misspelling, though, but then, some people take the Neue Deutsche Rechtschreibung pretty far... ;-)

Of course, you have to check back with the customer, as everybody else has already pointed out.

Asker: Thanks, good thinking. A misspelling/variation of Kanüle perhaps?

agree  Richard Benham: I was about to write that "canula" and its derivatives had only one "n", but I checked my dictionary and found that both single and double "n" are accepted.

neutral  Ford Prefect: The matrix reference refers to _extracellular_ matrix - nothing to do with X-ray detectors/screens. It's hard to imagine the maufacture of or utility of a matrix of microcannulae.

microcalorimeter arrays

Explanation:
This answer might be relevant if it refers to the X-ray detector, but probably not if it refers to the design of the screen (bildschirm). There are a few good hits for microcalorimeters being used in astronomy, but I cannot find anything directly relevant to medical imaging - hence low confidence. That said, your sentence sounds like a patent or research paper, so if it's brand new, how many hits do you expect?

I strongly recommend you confirm the spelling and meaning of the word with your client.

Results 1 - 10 of about 178 for development high-resolution x-ray scintillator microcalorimeter

Results 1 - 10 of about 330 for "microcalorimeter arrays".

Results 1 - 10 of about 30 for "microcalorimeter arrays" medicine.

Asker: Thanks for the thoughts. I will definitely check with the customer. This sentence is actually how the company describes itself in a directory listing and pretty much all I have to go on. http://db.adt-online.de/izbm.asp?AK=DET&PG=1&FA=2146523149&SL=37&SU=-1&SRC=OWZ&FT=

neutral  Richard Benham: This is a clever idea, but it is sticking one's neck out far too far to use without checking with the client (as you rightly suggest).

Notes to answerer
Asker: I'll check of course, but by jove, I think you got it! Combining James' "array" with your "microchannel" I came across this "X-ray image intensifier tube having a photocathode and a scintillator screen positioned on a microchannel array" (http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5319189.html). It even mentions scintillators, which must be good. I'll wait a while before grading so I can include what the customer says.
