Ringrazio tutti di cuore per le risposte. Credo che utilizzerò finestra padre che ho poi trovato nei glossari microsoft. Nel software viene utilizzata spesso la terminologia microsoft ho trovato frasi intere uguali a quelle presenti nei glossari MS.

Explanation:
In ambito Microsoft, vengono usate spesso sia finestra madre, padre, genitore,genitrice - su google si trovano molti riscontri - che personalmente non mi piaccion molto: in inglese userei "finestra parent ", termine usato anche da microsoft nel primo riferimento citato.
In questo caso, non dovendo tradurre un software che usa terminologia Microsoft (un software per gestione aeroportuale...) si potrebbe usare anche finestra principale, visto che, come vedi dal secondo esempio citato; è il significato reale di ElternFenster o parent window)
