See explanation below... Explanation: In the olden days, it would have been lead foil. Nowadays, they often use a thin plastic shrink material, but here I think they are talking about a 'complex material' (i.e. made up of more than a single layer) and which has the 'heavy' feel to it of the old lead, without the health risks! It's quite probably a lead film with a plastic liner film, for example --- I'm forever peeling the stuff of my bottles, but I must admit I've never actually dissected it to find out what it's made up of. The important thing is that it is thick and heavy enough, and will take a 'pewter-like' stamp --- i.e., it reeks 'quality without lead poisoning' |

Aluminum composite (capsule) Explanation: I'm more or less in agreement with Dusty on this one, and will go one further in putting forward the term above. Indeed, the web sites cited mention that this type of capsule replaces the now banned lead foil ones and has as much malleability and pliability as tin or lead foil ones, whilst also retaining the aesthetic properties (quality without lead...etc.). polylam Explanation: Capsule "NOBILUX", complexe lourd ALU/POLYETHYLENE collé et tête ALUMINIUM www.douane.gouv.fr/dab/pdf/01-069.pdf Today all of that has changed, and the capsules have become an important element in promoting the marketability of wines, particularly premium wines. Joseph Hoeller, Business Unit Manager of Klöckner Pentaplast of America, Inc. (Gordonsville, Virginia), which is a major provider of vinyl packaging of all types in the U.S., and represents its sister company, Kalle Pentaplast GmbH, in the western hemisphere, reports that of the more than 450 million capsules produced annually in the U.S. 40% are made from vinyl, 25% of POLYLAM (an ALUMINUM FOIL/POLYETHYLENE/ALUMINUM sandwich) and 15% tin, with some 20% comprising non-capsule bottle tops of wax, B-tops and other materials. This is a far cry from 1990 when the figures were 80% tin/lead, 15% vinyl and 5% POLYLAM. http://www.kpafilms.com/KPA/case_histories/article_winecaps-... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2006-02-07 12:56:51 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- This year's look at wine capsules reveals an increase in polylam usage and new decorative techniques in an effort to stand apart from the rest. ... winebusiness.com Stock wine capsules and closures in PVC and polylam and custom capsules in full range of colors and sizes for wine bottling. www.canalspackaging.com Vinicap manufacture PVC and aluminum capsules for wine and sparkling wine bottles.
