I take the point made by 'femme' in another answer but in the text I am translating I don't think it was referring to a particular type of inquiry/investigation used specifically in domestic violence cases but the usual type of 'local investigation' carried out in the case of any crime.

Explanation:
Although "local investigation" is a perfectly reasonable translation, in some jurisdictions it means something other than an "enquête de proximité", for example an investigation run by local forces (county, city/precinct) rather than higher levels (state, FBI). My diligent studying of 'NYPD Blue' suggests that when cops go "sur les lieux" and seek information locally they call it canvassing. Of course, this usage may be limited to the mythical 15th precinct of NYC!

I don't agree with "local investigation" because I believe that has more to do with any locale such as a city in general where this is domestic violence which occured at a specific address more than likely, in a neighborhood. I think "inquiry" is too formal in this case.
