Golden eagle feathers decorate this warrior’s coup (pronounced coo) stick. Many natives had a tradition of simply touching an enemy with their coup stick, when they could have easily killed them from a distance with a bow and arrow. “Counting coup” humiliated the enemy and was a very brave act.

これはまったく北米先住民族、特に平原部族と呼ばれるダコタ、シャイアン、アラパホ、ブラックフート族など、かなり戦闘精神の高い人々の文化というコンテキストのなかで使用される言葉です。Coup とは辞書を調べればわかりますが「打撃」という意味で、フランス語です。
フランス人は「ボイジャー」と呼ばれる毛皮(ビーバーの)採集の猟師としてインディアン部族のなかにはいってゆき、一緒に暮らしたので、いまでもこれらの部族にはフランス語の苗字を持ったひとびと、また地名がすくなくありません。それが彼らの昔からの習慣をフラン語でひょうげんするもととなったのでしょう。
つぎのサイトは私自身のものです。ちなみに私にはインディアンに関する著作が4,5冊ありますので、これは straight from the horse's mouth の情報だと思ってください。
も少し付け加えますと、これら”戦闘的”部族は、だからといってやたらに血に飢えていたわけではなく、そこには日本の武士道と同じ礼儀がありました。
そのひとつがこのクウ数えです。それはただ殺せばよいという殺伐な精神とは正反対のもでした。

Explanation:
カナダの小学校を出て数十年経ちむすが、coup stickを見ただけで思い出しました。機関銃のない時代、北米では敵でもやたらに殺すのはご法度でした。面子というか、殺す代わりに叩くのは栄養なことでした。
因みにcoupはフランス語で、英語のblow(ボクシングのbody blow参照)の意味です。日本語では一打?
