I Propre Plaie non infectée, sans inflammation, et où les tractus digestif, respiratoire ou uro-génital ne sont pas incisés. De plus, une plaie propre est fermée en première intention et drainée, si nécessaire, par un système clos.
II Propre-contaminée Plaie comprenant une incision, sous contrôle et sans contamination inhabituelle, des tractus digestif, respiratoire ou uro-génital. Les opérations portant sur les voies biliaires, l'appendice, le vagin et l'oro-pharynx sont inclues dans cette catégorie à condition qu'il n'y ait pas d'évidence d'infection ou d'interruption dans la technique d'asepsie.
