"The cross section of a given log comprises three different zones:
Heartwood is the inner, dark part of the log and contains the oldest cells. This is where the afore-mentioned substances are stored. Heartwood is therefore dryer, harder and stronger.
Sapwood is the zone through which nutrients and water are conducted. It is usually of a lighter col-our, moister and softer.
Ripewood is similar to heartwood but differs in colour both from heartwood and sapwood."
