複数のファイルを一つのファイルにまとめるアーカイブ形式の一つ。また、TAR形式のアーカイブの作成と展開を行なうソフトウェア(コマンド)。複数のファイルで構成されるソフトウェアの配布などに利用される。UNIX系OSで広く普及している形式である。圧縮機能はもっていないので、アーカイブ機能のないGZIPと組み合わせて使用される。TAR形式のファイルには、ファイル名の末尾に「.tar」とつけることが多い。
