Portuguese term or phrase: casarões de fachada
Em 1967, quando a Zona Franca foi, efetivamente, instalada, Manaus era uma cidade pacata, com ruas de calçamento de pedras, com 245 mil habitantes. Hoje, o antigo calçamento foi recoberto de asfalto, as ruas estreitas deram lugar a largas avenidas e os "casarões de fachada" imponente vão, aos poucos, sendo substituídos por arranha-céus.

colonial style houses
Explanation:
I would translate this as one of the follwing:
colonial style houses
colonial facades*
large colonial houses

* the "houses" is implied and obvious and the point of the writer is made clear - ie the contrast between this image and the image of skyscrapers.

I think the "casarao" is implied in the word "colonial" - the original reader knows that a casarao de fachada implies the colonial style in Manaus. The same image will be seen by the reader of the English in "colonial style" (in my opinion...).

-> Hi, "mansion" = "large house". Mansion is from the latin "mansus" (dwelling) related to the verb "manere" (to stay). I am not sure what you mean by saying that house "could be anything". The key image words here are colonial and facade.

casarões de fachada
mansions with the elegant facades

Explanation:
I don't know if there's a special connotation associated with "fachada," but certainly the text is talking about mansions.
