Hello,
From an article on the visit by a political figure to a company's water treatment plant in a Muslim desert nation: "Après avoir écouté un bref exposé [sur l'installation], le Président a goûté l'eau produite par l'usine d'osmose et a inauguré une nouvelle ***stèle***." What could "stèle" mean in this context? Thanks very much!

My apologies to all for the late response: in the end I was still unsure what the object was made of or looked like, but I used "marker" as this was a safe answer and carried the connotation of being something official that one would unveil. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Explanation:
A "stèle" is a vertical stone placed as a marker. It is also the term used for tombstones "à l'anglaise", something the French don't have (they place great marble slabs over the entire grave).

In your context, it seems to be fulfilling the function if not the place of a (wall) plaque, and to make the meaning clear, that is what I would call it.

At the first site below, it is a wall plaque; in the second, a plaque fixed to an upright stone monument.
