I am tending towards "plain mussels".
Does anyone have any better ideas.

Thanks to all.
I think this approximates it best. I could find no confirmation about the "mussels au naturelle" and a few meagre mentions of 'au nature'.

neutral  writeaway: all mussels are steamed-natuur just means there's no 'sauce'-so they're cooked in a court bouillon, without wine, without sauce-just ' natuur'. that's all it means./so you don't eat plain omlettes or plain rice? ;-)

-> Not necessarily (e.g. grilled, fried) and I'm not suggesting steamed by itself - it has to be qualified. "Plain mussels" just doesn't sound very attractive on a menu. IMHO

agree  FionaT: This says just what it is, without using any negative words such as "plain" or "no sauce". If there are also mussels with sauce on the menu, the fact that this entry just says "steamed mussels" would imply to me that there is no sauce with this one.

(plain) mussels

Explanation:
I think you might just be right, although I would not say "plain" as it might put the eater off a bit. I also think this is Flemish. Look at the google hits.

agree  writeaway: in plain English, yes. Alexander lives in Belgium so it's only logical if the menu is from a Belgian restaurant. how would this be expressed in the Netherlands version of Dutch?
