Mehrfachtraktionsfähigkeit multiple traction capability Explanation: This is it exactly; "multiple traction" is when two or more units or locomotives are coupled together to haul a train, and are under the control of one driver. If two locomotives have NO mutual "multiple traction capability", then although they could still be coupled to haul one train, one driver would be required on each. Basically, it has to do with system compatibility; even on one railway, in the past different manufacturers' locomotives were more often than not incompatible with each other, but in recent years, the railway administrations have started specifying compatibility between locomotive types; rather like the "interoperability" which is now beginning to allow both locomotives and multiple units (ICE, Thalys, TGV etc.) to be seen much more commonly in other than their "home" countries. |
