A nagy hengerszám, a motor beépítési helyének korlátozottsága v. valamely más ok szükségessé teheti a motor rövidebb kialakítását. Ezt általában a hengerek V-elrendezésével (ritkán boxer v. csillag-elrendezéssel) érjük el. A forgattyústengely térbeli szerkezete, a főcsapágyak elhelyezése, stb. azonban határt szab ennek a törekvésbek.
Ha a motorolaj csepeg, annak az oka a motorban lévő valamelyik tömítés (nem szigetelés!) meghibásodása, olajkiverődés, az olajleeresztő csavar laza meghúzása, stb. Ezeknek nincs köze a motor építési hosszához.
