English term or phrase: prickle
Normally the little fairies were merry and inclined to have as much fun as they could, swaying on grass-blades, playing with dragonflies, riding beetles in the grass. But when they were in bad humor, they would ***prickle everyone with burs*** really hard, or fly on harnessed bees making them sting anyone who passed by.

Dear native English speakers!
Please advise if it is OK to use 'prickle' when talking about burs (burdocks). Or, perhaps, it would be better to use 'sting' here? I am not sure.
This is my translation from Russian.

Note: \'bur\' is a variant of \'burr\' and not incorrect, but I think you will find that the spelling \"burr\" is more common.

throw prickly burrs really hard at everyone

Explanation:
Hello Andrew: do you know this plant (Arctium lappa)? Burrs don't really hurt when pushed against your skin, they stick to your clothes because of the tiny hooks all over the burrs, or to animals' fur; you could throw them hard at people, but not prick them hard - prickle, as you had it, sounds better as it sounds less rough than prick
