Superintendente(-chefe?) Explanation: "Chief Inspector" The British equivalent of Kommissar would be Inspector. The US equivalent would be Lieutenant. In all three cases this rank represents the lowest superintending (BE) or commissioned officer (US) rank. "The rank structure of the German Police is very much like that of the Military Service with different names for different ranks. All public servants in Germany are categorized in a federal salary system that applies to employees of all three levels of government ( federal – state – municipal). The pay structure is such that police is slotted in from A5 to A16. These are the different pay levels attached to the appropriate ranks from Constable to Chief of Police. The commissioned ranks start at A9 and reach all the way up the A16 (Chief). These are administrative positions removed from general patrol work on the street. In the majority of the states the recruits start at level A6 or A7. After training and several years of patrol work in the streets, favorable assessments by your superiors and a little bit of luck you can now apply to climb the ladder to success (A9 and up). This requires attendance at a police academy for further studies. I started my studies in February of 1997 and will be finished in July of 1999. I will then receive a diploma and be promoted to the rank of “Kommissar A9” (Lieutenant).
