English to Russian: Rousseau, The Village of Becquigny General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Source text - English With its quaint, thatch-roofed houses and puddled main street, this 19th century view of a village in northern France radiates an air of serenity. Yet the choice of subject also reflects the artist’s passion for preserving, in pictures, the traditional French countryside against the rapidly encroaching Industrial Revolution.
Pierre Rousseau was associated with a group of artists known as the Barbizon School, who took inspiration from nature, setting up their easels to paint “en plein air,” that is, outdoors, from nature. While Rousseau began his pictures outdoors, he reworked them for years in his Paris studio, seeking to express not just the appearance but the very soul of the natural landscape.
Rousseau started painting The Village of Becquigny in 1857.
The composition
is divided into horizontal bands of land and sky, and bisected by a vertical path that disappears into the distance. We admire the tranquil light, the attention to detail and everyday life. It was influenced by 17th century Dutch landscapes that Rousseau saw at the Louvre.
For all his love of tradition, Rousseau was a restless innovator. The night before he submitted this picture to the Paris Salon of 1864, he repainted the sky a brilliant sapphire blue, in homage to Japanese prints he had recently seen. When critics complained about his “excess of invention,” he returned the sky to the original muted tones we see here.
