Let us consider one of the problems while translating English words into Tamil.
Some of the translators translate words just like that without considering whether the word will suit with similar or allied words.
Take the word Telephone. This has been translated as ‘tholaipesi’(¦¾¡¨Ä§Àº¢). Here, for the ‘tele’ part ‘thoalai’(¦¾¡¨Ä) is selected and for the part ‘phone’ ‘pesi’(§Àº¢) is selected.
What about the allied words like ‘telecine’,

Let us consider one of the problems while translating English words into Tamil.
Some of the translators translate words just like that without considering whether the word will suit with similar or allied words.
Take the word Telephone. This has been translated as ‘tholaipesi’(¦¾¡¨Ä§Àº¢). Here, for the ‘tele’ part ‘thoalai’(¦¾¡¨Ä) is selected and for the part ‘phone’ ‘pesi’(§Àº¢) is selected.
What about the allied words like ‘telecine’, ‘telecommunication’ etc.
The Tamil word ‘tholai’ (¦¾¡¨Ä) goes well with all the English words starting with ‘Tele’
Consider the following words :
Telecine : tholaippadam (¦¾¡¨ÄôÀ¼õ)
Telecommunication : thlaiththodarpu (¦¾¡¨Äò ¦¾¡¼÷Ò)
Teleconferencing : tholaik kalanthuraiyaadal (¦¾¡¨Äì ¸ÄóШá¼ø)
Telecopy : tholai nagal (¦¾¡¨Ä ¿¸ø)
Telemanagement : tholai melanmai (¦¾¡¨Ä §ÁÄ¡ñ¨Á)
Telemedicine : tholai maruththuvam (¦¾¡¨Ä ÁÕòÐÅõ)
Telemeter : tholaimaani (¦¾¡¨Ä Á¡É¢)
Telephone : tholaipesi (¦¾¡¨Ä §Àº¢)
Telephone exchange : tholaipesi inaippakam (¦¾¡¨Ä §Àº¢ þ¨½ôÀ¸õ)
Teleprinter : tholai achchuppori (¦¾¡¨Ä «îÍô¦À¡È¢)
Teleprocessing : tholai seyalaakkam (¦¾¡¨Ä ¦ºÂÄ¡ì¸õ)
Telesoftware : tholaimenporul (¦¾¡¨Ä ¦Áý¦À¡Õû)
Teletext : tholai urai (¦¾¡¨Ä ¯¨Ã)
Television : tholaikkaatchi (¦¾¡¨Ä측ðº¢)
Telex : tholainagali (¦¾¡¨Ä ¿¸Ä¢)
In all the above words the word ‘tholai; (¦¾¡¨Ä) goes well with all the words.
Like this, the words ‘Command’, ‘Terminal’ and Text will go well with ‘kattalai’, (¸ð¼¨Ç)‘munaiyam’ (Ó¨ÉÂõ) and ‘urai’. (¯¨Ã)
Take the word ‘compiler’ and editor. The Tamil translation of ‘thokuppalar’ (¦¾¡ÌôÀ¡Ç÷) is being used for both the above English words.
This is where we have to follow the above technique and verify whether the translation will go well with other connecting words.
The word ‘Edit’ is being used in Computer engineering as well as with Journalism. Hence we have to choose an appropriate Tamil word so that it could be applicable in both the cases. Edit is being translated as ‘thiruthu’ (¾¢ÕòÐ) by some translators. In the journalism the word editor is being translated as ‘aasiriyar’ (º¢Ã¢Â÷). In the film world and computer engineering this word is being translated as ‘thokuppalar’ (¦¾¡ÌôÀ¡Ç÷).
Hence we may go in for ‘thoku’ (¦¾¡Ì). The magazine editor may be translated as ‘ithaz aasiriyar’ (þ¾ú º¢Ã¢Â÷).
These are some of the problems we are facing in English – Tamil translation.
We will see some more points in our next article.
