Hello,

I have been searching this topic in this forum but the latest post I have found is from 2011, so I hope it is a better idea to post the topic again

I am really confused about which edition of DNS or even which Dragon product to buy. I have tried DNS Premium 12.5 in Spanish, just a for few days, with good results in my local desktop, but I have problems using it via remote desktop (I have posted about it a few days ago). I think this could be due to an obsolete PC (2,0 GHz, 4 GB RAM), so I guess I also have to purchase a new PC... :/

So my situation is the following: I work locally with Trados Studio 2015, and via remote desktop with MemoQ 2014/2015. There are a lot of features of the Premium version which I don't think I need: I never have to create presentations or spreadsheets, and I also don't need to use voice commands, because I translate very often SW interfaces and part of my translations are already "commands", so Dragon performs the action instead of writing it down... for example, "Close window" will not be written as such in Trados, but the Trados file will get closed! very dangerous...

I translate very technical documents, normally industrial engineering, so I will have to create a lot of vocabulary which is probably not recognised the first time!

I also need good integration with remote desktops! I have been recommended to buy a networked version of Dragon Professional Individual for this purpose, but some of my colleagues use DNS in remote desktops without any problems (with Idiom though)... Are both Home and Premium compatible with remote desktops or do I have to go for a more upmarket product?

My reason to use Dragon is a recently diagnosticated arthritis in my fingers, but I don't mind typing something short during my work (for example, Alt+Num+ to confirm and go to the next segment

I don't know what more I can tell about my situation to help get a general idea if anyone would like to give me some advice on what to buy

A big thanks to anyone who has read my post so far

Carmen

Hi Carmen, not really an answer to your question, but since no one has answered yet, someone just asked something similar over in the CafeTran forums @ https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/discussions/topics/6000051462 (where I provided quite a lengthy answer)

Plus … the best forum online at the moment for everything and anything related to dictation is: http://www.knowbrainer.com/forums/forum/index.cfm . You should definitely also have a look over there!

Michael

PS: you should definitely also contact Nora Díaz, who is the specialist in dictation + SDL Studio, plus she also works in Spanish:

Translation for dummies Oct 19, 2017

This is a bit embarrassing, but I don't really understand what is meant by "working via remote desktop". Sometimes my tech guy tweaks my configuration remotely when I have minor issues, so I assume it means translating using a similar system, which I've never done, but I imagine it would be more complicated than just working "normally" on my own PC, where my Dragon Premium version 13.0 does everything I need it to.

Thanks for your reply!

Via remote desktop means that I can connect my computer to theirs, I see their desktop and can work on their systems, with their own programs and versions of Windows, as if I where sitting at their office

This is a standard feature that comes with Windows, you can find it in Start -> All programs -> Accesories.

This is a standard feature that comes with Windows, you can find it in Start -> All programs -> Accesories.

Working via remote desktop is really useful because I can work with expensive CAT tools which I don't need to purchase as the agency I am translating for has them ready for me

We also avoid any file interchanges via attachment or FTP.

Sometimes I even work with private translation apps created by their clients which are not available anywhere else.

Greetings,

Carmen
