I would like to ask if anyone is using a paid or open source software that can work in languages other than the most popular ones such as Spanish, German, etc.

I think the Windows 7 voice recognition is quite good, but unfortunately it only supports the language of your OS, which in my case is English.

The extra languages I would need would be Portuguese (from Portugal) and Romanian.

TIA

Thank you. I did find this solution, but I have no desire or need to upgrade my Windows OS.

You're right, but there may still be a way to make it work Mar 17, 2013

I realized that after doing a little more research. However, I found something that may be helpful on the Microsoft Community site, dated April 7, 2010 (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/viavoice-and-windows-7/3ca8a671-d90a-40bb-9d0d-820dbd4d654d).

ViaVoice has been discontinued, but you can still find copies for sale. Here's one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/VIAVOICE-PRO-REGULAR-WIN-VISTA/dp/B0000A58IX.

Anyway, here's a quote from the Microsoft Community site:

Unfortunately, ViaVoice version 10 is not a compatible program with Windows 7. You may check for the compatibility details here.

However, if the program worked with Windows XP, you may try installing the same using Windows XP compatibility mode in Windows 7 and check if that does the trick:

To install the program in Windows XP compatibility mode,

1. Right click the installation file and select Properties.

2. Click the Compatibility tab.

3. Under Compatibility mode, check the Run this program in compatibility mode for: option.

4. Select either Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the available options.

5. Click Apply and OK.

Refer the link below for more information on compatibility mode:

You may contact IBM support for further assistance:

I'm a Dragon user myself, but my experience with Windows 7 speech recognition was what convinced me to invest some money. I found that I needed more than the Windows 7 version offers.

Thanks, James Mar 18, 2013

running the software in compatibility mode is something I haven't thought of!

Yes, DNS is always the first stop, but unfortunately it only works with about 5 languages.

Thank you again.

Romanian? May 30, 2014

Any luck with finding something other than DNS for Romanian?
I keep asking this question now and then because I believe DNS has developed some app for phones and it should not take long to prepare a standalone desktop version.
