Muriel Vasconcellos wrote: I worry about these politicans who use Twitter - don't they have better things to do? Exactly. Social networks such as Facebook sucks out a lot of time but Twitter is even more time-demanding. I think it's a good tool for those who have a lot of time to list their activities as they perform them. It's not for me, certainly.

Well I have a facebook account, I have received a lot of messages, but I have no time to reply, no time even to log on, Twitter? I am not interested, I don't see the point, I don't understand why I should "follow" someone, for Facebook, I know people who have "friends" on FB who live in the same city, I mean this is quite "useless". Anyway, If someone can spend a loto of time on twitter, facebook, msn and so on, I wonder when they work!!! And I am so bored of the virtual life... I suggested this poll ages ago and completely forgot about it. I also think Twitter is a waste of time. I guess I can see the point of it, but let's face it, who's interested in whether I'm just making a cheese sandwich? Nobody, not even my closest friends. | | | Nikki Graham United Kingdom Local time: 15:08 Spanish to English
I've been using Twitter for about four months now. I used to spend a lot of time on here, answering questions, reading forums, etc., which was all far more time consuming than Twitter and Facebook, which I also use. I use Facebook mainly to keep in contact with friends and family who live abroad and to share photos and videos with them. I also have some colleagues on my list of Friends, and I am a fan of various causes of interest to me. I use Twitter to get the latest news, follow my political party, causes of interest and quite a few translation colleagues, whose comments and links can be very interesting . For example, I found out about this poll via Twitter. I have also received help with a translation question when having a duh moment, and firing off the question and receiving the reply took seconds, whereas asking a question on here would have taken far longer. Twitter and Facebook are what you make of them. It's up to you which people you follow and read about. I cannot sit here and translate hour after hour without a break, and Twitter and/or Facebook now provide that welcome break and a bit of human contact. ▲ Collapse | | | Jenn Mercer United States Local time: 10:08 Member (2009) French to English I do, but not always professionally | Jan 23, 2010 |
I recently merged my business and personal accounts because I found that I was not updating my professional account enough. It took me a bit to get used to twitter, and I am not sure that I really grew to love it until I installed Tweetdeck. For me, it is like having a quietly burbling conversation going on in the next room. I can listen, add an occasional comment, or shut the door. It is almost like having coworkers that I get to select myself! No more long stories about irritable... For me, it is like having a quietly burbling conversation going on in the next room. I can listen, add an occasional comment, or shut the door. It is almost like having coworkers that I get to select myself! No more long stories about irritable bowel syndrome and diet pills (yes, actual examples). Instead, just this morning, I have tweets about wearing a kilt, blog writing tips, writing/selling rpg's, disaster recovery efforts in Haiti, the flavor of the day at my favorite ice cream shop, and various good morning's from friends. It is nice, and only as distracting as I would like it to be. Follow me at jennmercerwt and odds are quite good that I will follow you back - even if I don't understand your language. I am currently following people who often tweet in in German, Gaelic, Portuguese, and Spanish as well as French. ▲ Collapse

I got a lof of invitations but I never replied. I wonder what benefits, if any, it might bring to me as a translator. BTW, it is not a free site (you can set up a free account but the functions of a free account are very limited), and its membership is expensive. | | | Jenn Mercer United States Local time: 10:08 Member (2009) French to English No drawbacks to LinkedIn | Jan 24, 2010 |
I am not sure that I have ever gotten a job from LinkedIn, but I have enjoyed connecting friends and colleagues to each other. I also like reading the articles shared by the various translation and French groups to which I belong. I am not sure which features you would like to use, but I have not found that I am missing anything with a free account. It is worth it to set one up just to be able to accept connections. | | | Not for me either. | Jan 24, 2010 |

If I have some free time left, I choose to spend it here on Proz.com. I learn a lot from all of you, guys and girls. Specially from the Trados and PC gurus. And a lot more about our profession. My photos and greetings are sent by e-mail; I read the news on the newspaper or watch'em on TV. My family members call me by phone; and I see my loved ones everyday... I don't need Twitter at all. I already have lot of sites to view, need another one? oh no thanks

No, I have no time for it and don't see the point! | Jan 26, 2010 |
I haven't got the time for twittering and I don't see the point in doing so. I have already so much mail to get through every day that I simply cannot afford to spend more time on socialising in this way.
