Hi,

For the past few months, I've been receiving emails from various addresses, unknown to me, with what seems to be extracts of a novel, like the one below. I've just been ignoring and deleling them. But they keep coming, and I was wondering: Is anyone else getting them? Are they a new form of virus?

Captain Blood Jun 22, 2005

I've no idea why you are receiving these, but this is an excerpt from the novel "Captain Blood", by Rafael Sabatini (I enjoyed reading his books when I was about 14 - a long time ago).

Viagra spam Jun 22, 2005

I haven't received any of these e-mails (yet), but they're apparently Viagra spam:

Certainly spam Jun 22, 2005

Well, I'd say it's certainly spam. Many spammers include "real" text in their emails, which makes it harder for spam detection programs (like Spam Assassin, Bayesian programs) to identify them as junk. Simply because they look "real": a one-line Viagra ad at the end of 3 paragraphs of literature, or a virus/Trojan attached to an email of a novel extract.

The funniest are the ones that don't bother to quote real literature but instead cobble together fairly random text. They include

Anna Karenina + Rolexes Jun 22, 2005

My latest spam had 3 lines selling "luxury Rolexes" followed by several paragraphs of Anna Karenina!:

"Not one word did Stepan Arkadyevich say in reference to Kitty and the Shcherbatskys; he merely gave him greetings from his wife. Levin was grateful to him for his delicacy..."
