Same weird website visitors Feb 5, 2018

Hi all,

Yes, I have also noticed that for 2-3 days now, there are some really unusual web visitors. I hope this is not a bug, where visitors can "steal" our personal data for some fraudulent activities?

I hope this get investigated and fixed soon.

Thanks,

Nelly

Same here Feb 5, 2018

Hello,

I saw the same on my profile, especially today.
There was even a visit from a Russian pornographic site ...
No idea what they were looking for.

Would be glad to know what's going on.

Safe from whom? Feb 6, 2018

Today's spooky email received from proz.com.

The outsourcer has chosen to make it accessible only to a specific list of eligible service providers, including you. Please note that you must log in to your ProZ.com account in order to access this job posting. ------------ "

I opened the page and it said: No job found with that ID

Then I opened proz's main page and checked this job in the job board, so I was able to see the job.
The difference is the name of the link:

This is the link that works: https://www.proz.com/translation-jobs/1405595

And this is what I received from proz.com: http://www.proz.com/job/1405595

Now I'm wondering what happened with all my emails sent via proz.com sent by clients....
and also wondering who is doing this?

I know the why: me not receiving jobs via proz.com.

Bests,
Katalin

You should be able to see the job posting at either link Feb 6, 2018

Dear Katalin,

I'm stepping in to point out that you should be able to see the job posting at either link.

Private job postings are only ever shown to people who meet their restrictions defined by the job poster. Those who don't meet those restrictions see an error message.

If you find more anomalies in your use of ProZ.com, please take screenshots of them and forward them through a support request. That will help us look into these issues. Thank you.

Dear Alejandro,

I was logged in (as you can see in the attachment) and I'm eligible to see this job:

Spooky

Also today I received 1 test email from the site staff and one support ticket notification and both emails had a warning message:

"This email has failed its domain's authentication requirements. It may be spoofed or improperly forwarded!"

I received the following message from my mail provider:
"Both messages were improperly forwarded (failed domain verification for spf and dmarc)."

Bests,
Katalin

Just received a reply to my ticket. I hope it is safe to publish it here, as it could prove useful to others:

Wrong job posting URL Feb 6, 2018

Dear Katalin,

Thank you for supplying a screenshot as requested. I see you are opening https://www.proz.com/job/140559 , while the correct URL for the job posting is http://www.proz.com/job/1405595 (note that the number is different: 140559 vs 1405595 ). That explains why you can't see the job posting,

Dear Katalin,

Thank you for supplying a screenshot as requested. I see you are opening https://www.proz.com/job/140559 , while the correct URL for the job posting is http://www.proz.com/job/1405595 (note that the number is different: 140559 vs 1405595 ). That explains why you can't see the job posting, there is no job posting with id 140559.

As for the message you received from your email service provider, I think it may be referring to the fact that the "From:" email address is not the same as the "Reply-to:" email address. All profile messages are sent from [email protected] , but the "reply-to:" email is what the sender chooses to make it. This makes it possible to email ProZ.com users without disclosing their email address (the sender will only see the email address if the translator decides to reply).

I hope this explains. You can find more information on what email spoofing is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_spoofing . You may want to contact your email service provider if you have more questions about this. Thank you.

Best regards,
Alejandro

Those "disturbing ProZ.com profiles" are Referrer spam Feb 8, 2018

Dear @Jean_Dimitriadis,

In regards to this post:

Jean Dimitriadis wrote:

Before I open a support ticket, is anybody else experiencing this?
latest ProZ visits
Thanks,

What you have described here is a case of "referrer spam." The same thing was reported by @Angie_Garbarino in this post.

Referrer spam (also known as referral spam, log spam or referrer bombing) is a kind of spamdexing (spamming aimed at search engines). The technique involves making repeated website requests using a fake referrer URL to the site the spammer wishes to advertise. Sites that publish their access logs [NOTE: ProZ.com does not make access logs public and only allows profile owners to see access logs for their own profiles], including referrer statistics, will then inadvertently link back to the spammer's site. Except for polluting their statistics, the technique does not harm the affected sites.

The visitor filtering feature has been updated and you may now filter specific domains from undesired visitors. It works the same way as the IP filtering feature, which was released some time ago.

This new feature follows @Mirko_Mainardi's request in this post:

Mirko Mainardi wrote:

And it's not the first time either... Maybe it's a crawler crawling from page to page, but in that case, it would be nice if there was a regularly updated filter to filter out "non human visitors" (under "Search engine" or elsewhere).

Additionally, please note that known referrer spammers are already being filtered automatically.

Best regards,
Evelio Clavel

Articulate reply Feb 8, 2018

Evelio, many thanks for your explanations, this is the kind of articulate reply I was hoping for.

It is also reassuring to know ProZ is taking such reports seriously and moves forward to tackle the issue.

Domain filtering is an excellent answer to this type of profile visits, and the current implementation just spot on.

Thanks again!

Jean
