If you're concerned about that, create a version of your CV which will satisfy anyone wanting to see your "CV" but which can't be useful for anyone wanting to use it for ulterior purposes.

What got that got to do with it? I got clients with more then one CAT tool. For your information, the client with Across is a 'repeat client' as you call it, a repeat Studio client. Don't blame me for your inflexibility.

I do not understand the need to include your CV in your profile if you already have the profile more or less complete.
The essential information the client wants or needs to know is here - if we are talking of proz, in this case. If the client needs to have my CV, she or he normally contacts me and asks for it, although it contains almost the same data as my profile and even less - specialisation, rates, software, recent projects and WWA - what else is there to know?

People working for companes, especially larger companies, find it comforting to have something they can download, something less mutable than a page on a web site that, for all we know, may be gone next week and could very easily be amended by its owner. A CV in pdf or Word format gives them a snapshot in time, a document they can file in their /EN-LT/Marius_Reika directory. It's easier to mail around - "look at the attached, what do you think of this guy?" - and for those that care you have far more control over how the information is presented than on a ProZ profile.
Small things, perhaps, but I believe they all mount up. When I interviewed people in a previous life, a well-prepared CV would often make me feel kindly disposed towards the applicant.

Same thing when I'm asked to "fill out their database" that contains 20 pages with numerous fields (takes up to 20 minutes of my time). Prior to this they ask for my CV. Well guess what all the details they require for their database can be extracted from my CV, so why wouldn't their salaried PM/assistant/employee do it instead of me doing it for free?
Yes, unfortunately, personal details abuse on the web is big, and I see no ways to report it or fight legally against it. So, the only way of prevention is to minimally expose them.

A few weeks ago, a colleague informed me that someone had approached him with my CV, slightly altered (but the moron had actually even left my mobile number on it!), and using the very professional looking email address "[email protected]".
And a few months ago, or was it a year, anyway, a while back, some other enterprising fellow actually copy/pasted my entire Proz portfolio onto his shitty website. "Edward Mahana" was/is his name (or one of them). Some of you here might still remember Edward from e.g. http://www.proz.com/forum/scams/264089-edward_mahana_the_translation_thief.html
I’m also all over the translator-scammers.com site mentioned by our resident ultra paranoid empy-profiler, "brg". Gosh, that does sound mysterious.
The problem with ultra paranoia though is that it comes across as really rude to all the rest of us poor fools using our real names and photos. But this is another topic for another thread…

I don't have my CV here on Proz. Even if I send it out to agencies, I send it in a read-only format, with "Not for use in tenders" written at the top.
I guess it's not possible to prevent this phenomenon completely, but at least you can make it more difficult for anyone trying (or make them think twice).

A colleague and friend of mine (an agency owner), just received yet another fake email from "[email protected]", with an altered version of my CV attached.
Incidentally, I have since removed my CV from my Proz profile and personal website.
