Hi all,

I was one of the first to upload an index here, but never got any further than that until tonight.

Tonight I wrote the beginnings of a proper web and uploaded some files, but before replacing my current index http://berniarmstrong.my.proz.com/ with a new index I need to be able to add links on the new index to the files I have already uploaded.

The problem is that I have no idea of the address of these uploaded files now. For example, I have uploaded a file called english_index - what url will it now have so I can link to it on my new index?

I can see the file using File Manager - but the link that is revealed if I open the file using FM is one that works via cPanel - what I need is the direct access address.

For example I need to be able to add a link to my new index which would look something like this:

http://berniarmstrong.my.proz.com/WHATDIRECTORY/english_index.html

- But I need to know what to put instead of WHATDIRECTORY

Despite the fact that I thought I had uploaded to the root directory, simply typing in http://berniarmstrong.my.proz.com/english_index.html does not reveal this file.

So can anyone help me with the link address I should use?

It would be very helpful to have the file manager list the real address of each file for linking purposes.

Thanks for reading this far and any advice,

Cheers,

Berni

Basically, unless you have specified a directory to upload the files to, or, in the case of cPanel's filemanager, have navigated to any subfolder under the root folder before clicking the 'Upload File' link, then the files are uploaded to the root folder, and should be accessed at http://yoursite/filename

You may view the url of the file in cPanel's filemanager by clicking the file link from the directory list, and you will find it in the frame to the right, below file-actions.

Thanks for your help and advice. I was totally shocked to follow your link and see the page appear. It certainly did not do that last night. Then I thought it might have something to do with a delay between publishing and the page appearing.

Thanks for your help and advice. I was totally shocked to follow your link and see the page appear. It certainly did not do that last night. Then I thought it might have something to do with a delay between publishing and the page appearing.

However, when I then attempted to open another couple of pages I uploaded last night using the same method -

http://berniarmstrong.my.proz.com/catalan_language.html

and

http://berniarmstrong.my.proz.com/index_catala.html

and

http://berniarmstrong.my.proz.com/cat2eng.html

All of these gave me a 404 "no such page" message.

What could be happening here?

Cheers,

Berni

STOP PRESS: I just discovered what the problem was. You need to transfer the file into the folder marked "Public.html" or it will not show up. I had uploaded a copy of the English index there last night - hence why you saw it - but then tried to access it by adding
/public.html/ as a diorectory name. which is why I didn't see it.

I will now upload all files to that folder in the future. Now all I have to figure out is why the images on these pages are not being displayed. Anyone any idea why that is?

Fixing your images Apr 26, 2006

Hi Berni,

Check your html source code to see how you "point to" your images. For example, on your http://berniarmstrong.my.proz.com/catalan_language.html page, I can see your waving flag at the top, but not the one further down. Your html src for the first is

src=catmovi.gif alt="Catalan Flag The Senyera"

Hi Berni,

Check your html source code to see how you "point to" your images. For example, on your http://berniarmstrong.my.proz.com/catalan_language.html page, I can see your waving flag at the top, but not the one further down. Your html src for the first is

src=catmovi.gif alt="Catalan Flag The Senyera"

and for the second it is

src="catalan_language_files/image002.jpg"

So you likely need to remove the "catalan_language_files/" reference, as the image itself is probably sitting in the same folder as your text and needs to be referenced simply as "image002.jpg"

Hope that helps : )

Brie
