When you migrate your domain to the new hosting system, the following things happen: - An account is created for you in the new hosting system. You can access your new hosting account through the control panel, but your domain won't yet point to this system. - I copy your old web site files to the new hosting system. - I manually make some changes to DNS and whois to redirect traffic for your domain to the new hosting system. These changes should begin to work within 15 minutes, but can take up to 3 days to propagate completely. - After the DNS changes have been made, you receive an email notification with instructions for changing your email client to access your new mail account. - You can continue to access your account on the old hosting mail server at legacy-mail.proz.com, and the old hosting FTP server at legacy-ftp.proz.com. After some reasonable period of time your old hosting account will be removed. - When the time comes for your domain to be renewed, you will receive a notice from ProZ.com directing you to a special domain renewal page. During the process of renewing your domain, it will also be transferred to our new domain registrar, allowing you to manage your domain via ProZ.com. I would like to automate the manual procedures above, but until I do there will be some delay between when you sign up for migration and when I get around to making the configuration changes. Until you receive the email notification telling you to switch to the new hosting configuration, your old configuration should continue to work as before. Let me know if there are any questions or comments. Regards, Jason ▲ Collapse

Dave REESE Japan Local time: 00:52 Japanese to English Updating Webpages | Jun 2, 2004 |
Jason, Thanks for all your help with this. I have been maintaining a personal website on Tripod for several years now, and I recently started a professional site on ProZ's old hosting system. Is there some way to make the new hosting system more user-friendly, or at least publish some kind of help guide? Dear Dave, A Getting Started guide is planned, but it is not yet completed. In the meantime you can turn to this forum for help. There are a few different ways to update your web page. You can use a third-party web site creation program like Microsoft Front Page or Macromedia Dreamweaver to create your web pages on your local computer, and then upload them to your hosting server. Alternatively, you can edit files while they are already on the server, either editing the raw HTML code or using a WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) HTML editor (requires IE 6 or Mozilla). See the File Manager section of the control panel documentation for information about uploading and editing your web site files. I hope this helps. Regards, Jason [Addendum: A Getting Started Guide is now available.]

Jason, I'd like to know if there are any inherent problems and how I could circumvent them before migrating to the new system. Your suggestions will become my checklist. - Gio
Migration to PHP not required | Sep 10, 2004 |
Giovanna Lester wrote: I'd like to know if there are any inherent problems and how I could circumvent them before migrating to the new system. Your suggestions will become my checklist. - Gio Hi Gio, The PHP scripting language is available on the new hosting system, but you are not required to use it. Since your existing site is in HTML, that HTML will render exactly the same on the new hosting system. I can only think of one possible incompatibility to be aware of when migrating. If you took advantage of the "ProZ.com integration" features in the old hosting system (such as the ability to search your member glossaries or KudoZ questions from your hosted site), those elements of your site will need some manual modifications in order to work properly on the new system. It doesn't look like you used those features on your site, so you should be able to migrate without a problem. I hope this helps. Regards, Jason
