Hello everyone.

We have some questions regarding the quality of translations from one of our translators and need to have it professionally evaluated to make the right decision. Is there a specific name for this kind of task? I want to know how to find an individual or an agency to do this for us, that's why I am asking about the name - to know what to search for.

May be this... Aug 6, 2018

I've made a test with a company, for a job as freelance English to Portuguese tanslator. They told me they would submit my translations to their "Reviewer", to evaluate it...

Thanks for your response, but that's not what I mean. We have our reviewers, but right now we need someone from the outside to do a thorough check-up, not because we want to make the translation better, but because we need to evaluate the capabilities of our translators.

A matter of terminology Aug 6, 2018

The terms "proofreading", "reviewing/revising" and "editing" are not used with exactly the same meanings worldwide. I would suggest as below, and in any event, that you should specify the details of the service you are requesting. That is the only way to be sure that what you are asking for is the service you will actually get, no matter what each party calls it.

I would suggest as below, and in any event, that you should specify the details of the service you are requesting. That is the only way to be sure that what you are asking for is the service you will actually get, no matter what each party calls it.

Proofreading is generally unilingual. The proofreader will read the translation to make sure it reads smoothly, that there are
no typing errors, grammar mistakes and that verbs are correctly conjugated, etc.

Revision involves the same tasks as for proofreading, but with one major difference: it will be done bilingually, with the reviser comparing the translation with the source text. In this instance, even if the text reads smoothly, the person doing the revision will be also expected to check that the meaning of the source text has been accurately represented. Specific terminology will be checked. Sometimes a translation may read well and make perfect sense; a proofreader will have no reason to suggest any changes. In the case of revision, comparing source and target texts, errors of meaning and subtle matters of style may be observed and corrections suggested.

Editing is pretty much used with the same meaning as revision/reviewing, although I think that editing would involve going ahead with the corrections of terminology and style. I think in practical terms, reviewing, revision and editing are considered as being the same task.

This may help: https://www.proz.com/translation-articles/articles/543/1/The-difference-between-editing-and-proofreading

The service you decide to ask for should be clearly defined so that everyone knows where they stand. You should expect to pay more for revision/review/editing as it requires the comparison of source and target texts. It takes longer and carries greater responsibility.

Independent evaluator or assessor? Aug 10, 2018

Maybe that is the term you are looking for. The following article shows you what an independent evaluator does in translation and you can find a lot of hits for the term too: http://www.translationdirectory.com/article32.htm.
