I would have become a full time freelance translator much earlier...

I would have taken a Master's degree in translation.

I love it!

Are you kidding? Mar 12, 2017

Why would I risk causing a disruption in the spacetime continuum? I've seen enough Star Trek episodes to know how that can pan out.

I might not have walked out on the love of my life, I might have turned down some of those black ops, I might have signed that recording contract or finished that novel, I might not have taken all that EPO and I might have trained as a doctor and done something useful with my life, but I didn't.

Translation hasn't been bad to me, but it's so derivative it hurts.

20 years earlier, in my case. The 20 years I have spent with traditional in-house jobs made me very unhappy and almost poor, making the employers and the government richer. I'm teaching my children not to do the same now.

Now seriously: There are plenty of other big mistakes I made in my life that I would change if I could go back, but I think that applies to everyone. If I could go back and change anything, I could be very surprised with the outcome. For example, I could find myself without my children, since one big mistake in my life was my first marriage.

It's useless to keep thinking of things like that. We must be thankful for what we've conquered.We have a mission here. Let's accomplish it.

No, Mar 12, 2017

not as far as translation goes. Well, maybe I should have started as a freelancer a few years earlier.

But for life in general: yes, of course there are things I should have done differently, but no serious regrets.

yes Mar 13, 2017

two things:
1) I would have kept my French and German "alive".. now they are just fragments of memories in my mind.. and I wish I could still speak these languages as I could 20 years ago
2) I wouldn't have come back to Italy to work - I had the chance to stay in England or to move to Germany and I decided to come back to this beautiful country, which is beautiful, yes, but a nightmare for freelancers

Back in the 1980s? No Mar 13, 2017

If I were young today, I would study something interesting, I would love geology for example. But back then? Even if they had accepted a woman in such a school, I would have ended - in the best case - in a construction company writing prospection reports. I say writing reports, not even doing the field work. Forget about research. In my generation, freelance work was the easiest way to emancipation.

My friend, I'll send it by courier (sort of rhymes )
I'll email the PM, who won't even be there

I've translated jobs that're full of gibberish
I've transliterated each 'n every highway;
And more, much more complete rubbish
I translated it my way.

Regrets, I've had a few crappy jobs;
But then again, too few for me to cry about
I've translated for Tony Soprano and the mob
And saw them through without a punch on the snout

I've crafted each turn of phrase
Each complex idiom along the Information Highway,
And more, much more than this,
I translated it my way.

Sorry, this is best I could do in five minutes.

Frankie would be proud of you, Julian.

Way back in the 1970's Mar 13, 2017

I would have changed a few things in my life, but I would still be a translator, that is, a translating pilot.
