Until recently I was sharing an office with a translator and two software developers. We never spoke in the office, would even use instant messaging if we needed to communicate amongst ourselves, then nattered non-stop over lunch and often ended up in the pub after work. We got on really well together. Then the software developers left, one to lucrative employment, the other to follow her husband. It wasn't worth keeping the office for just the two of us so now I'm at home.

I thought I'd be really depressed all by myself, but for the moment it's OK. I have to make an effort to stop work and go swimming or cycling, whereas before I simply rode my bike to the office and that was that job jobbed. I'm looking vaguely for some other work, like a half day of teaching at university, just to get out and talk to other people a bit.
I have looked into co-working places, of which there are plenty here, but I'm a bit wary of sharing a space with random strangers. I'd want to be able to talk with people at lunchtime but if people start talking while I'm trying to work that would be catastrophic. And the cost is way more than what we were paying for the shared office before. ▲ Collapse

I have been working in co-working places for a couple of years now.
I like to work (and to have lunch) with people doing different jobs.
But the coworking-space has to be rather quiet (there are a lot of quiet professions though).
And : I love walking to my office (20 min) and back again and forgetting about work at home.

I actually considered the idea.
I Thought it could be nice to work with other people around... but then...
I have kids who stay with me after school cause my wife works till 5 pm,
but mostly... my freedom...
wearing your cozy stuff while outside it is raining and it is cold and you have o reason to get wet...
I had 2 opportunities:
1) a nice office with 2 more people, each one in a different room and
2) a big co-working place

To me, it's silly to pay for a shared space in this day and age of coffee shops with free Internet. Or at least that's the way it is in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S.A.
If I need a break from my house, that's what I do and clearly, I'm not alone as there are many other digital workers who use coffee shops.
I can't fathom paying for a shared space, dressing for it, and commuting when you don't have to.

Took me several years (and expences) to build a comperhansive workstation that fits my needs, and the process of constantly perfcting it still continues. I can't imagine it would be possible to recrate it in other locations.

I find the idea of coworking spaces fairly unattractive. Why would I want to pay for something I already have (a working space), surround myself with other people and be forced to get dressed properly? I like to be able to sit in front of my laptop in my pyjamas whenever it suits me, make lunch whenever I feel like it etc. I certainly don't miss having 'colleagues' around so thank you, but no thank you.

I've got some good exp working on-site with non-language local and foreign specialists, but I'd rather not work in a co-working environment, let alone café or alike.
Why, sometimes I do, yet it has very little to do with my preferences)

If we're talking about a company setup or something like it, do not count on my illustrious presence. If there is a boss, hierarchy, working hours, rules, etc., I"m OUT.
Now, if it's a place where everyone is absolutely equal, working in the same level, with no one telling you what you can or cannot do, etc., it might be a great idea. Working with other people is great, and it does allow a bit of mutual help, although we obviously waste some time not working. But the bottom line may be qui... I have experienced it a few times before, and it was great in terms of collaboration, socializing, etc. The big issue was that all of them had a boss, working hours and rules. I will not join any of these again. ▲ Collapse
