Not the first place I would go Apr 14, 2016

... and this is partly why

I learned recently that you cannot browse Pinterest without an account (non-members get a big shaded banner that prevents them from viewing the content) ...

What I do know about Pinterest is that it is highly visual, and it seems to be connected with crafts, cooking and so on. It doesn't tie in with my image of business, legal and medical translation.

I am not totally averse to using social media to promote translators and translation, but if the idea is to be seen, then other places are more easily visible.

I don't use Facebook, and am not very active on LinkedIn either. Maybe one day when I get time!!

Mission statement Apr 14, 2016

I carried on nosing around, and finally found this, which the site uses to define itself: "The visual bookmarking tool that helps you discover and save creative ideas."

So it doesn't look directly relevant to us...

Is this another business to be acquired by Proz? I've had some hits when googling, but apparently you have to be signed up and that just draaawwws me away. Sorry, no signing up here.

Isn't that exactly what they are trying to do here? Apr 14, 2016

Exactly, Teresa! And I'm wondering why this poll was posted here. It surely looks like an attempt to promote it using this forum, doesn't it?

I find it difficult to see how it could promote my translation business. Any suggestions? Besides that, you have to be logged in to browse around the website. Really annoying.

I'm not quite sure why one of the top ten social network sites would need to promote their business on a translator platform. Hmmm...

Rather surprised that so many people here are unfamiliar with the name, it's a pretty major site.

I know that internet marketers are using Pinterest successfully to drive traffic to their sites. In case of sites that don't make for good pictures, they use memes or "motivational quotes" to get people to pin their "pictures".

I could see someone maybe posting screenshots of bad and/or funny translations on Pinterest. That might not get them customers per se but it would increase traffic to their site, thus moving it up in the Google rankings when someone searches their language combination. Might be worth a shot.

Ideas for using Pinterest Apr 15, 2016

A lot of people post "pictures" of text on Pinterest. You could publish quotes about translation like many colleagues do on Twitter. Or wise quotes. If you do book translations, you could publish the covers. There are many possibilities. The only problem is that I don't think Pinterest users would be looking for translators or comments about translation on the site. Of all the social media, LinkedIn is probably best for promoting one's brand as a translator.
