Altough my wife and I speak the same language, many times what she says and her reactions would be as well understood if they had been spoken in Chinese. And I'm sure she feels the same about me with the same frequency. Men and women do not speak the same language, no matter how hard they try.

By way of an anecdote to show how little English he has picked up over the years, he got angry with me one day and accused me of being rude to our small children. I challenged this, and it turned out that he though I was calling them "stupid", when in fact I was saying "stop it".

I am Italian and I have a Cuban husband. Since I know Spanish and he knows Italian, we find it simpler to keep speaking our native languages to each other.
Our son has native fluency in both languages and at home we do not have an "official" spoken language. I speak Italian while my husband speaks Spanish, and the little boy switches from one language to the other depending on whom he is talking to.
I would say we do that instinctively, nothing was planned ahead. So far, it works.

My native language is Russian and I'm married to an Italian and he doesn't speak a single word of Russian and has no intention to learn it so we speak Italian. But when my son (from the previous marriage) or my sister married to a Frenchman come to visit we all have to switch to English as that's the only common language for all of us.
