That is, making corrections on proof copies. I do some work checking school textbooks for English (as a foreign language) for secondary schools. The major part of the job is making sure it hangs together linguistically, because the authors are French, and that is done using Word. However, there's a lot of detail and so when time allows I also go over the proofs for typos and other fiddly details that may have got overlooked in the Word format. Some clients come by to pick them up at the reception here, however many prefer to receive them via conventional mail. As there is a post office just a block away, I don't mind taking that short walk for some exercise. Those were the days! My humdrum life would snap back to action with the all-familiar sound of the:
a) Door ring: FedEx b) Plastic clanking of my Sony fax machine, spitting pages c) Door ring again: courier bringing a job from across Manhattan
Now it's all impersonal emails.
