"Translation is as much about what you know in your own language as your knowledge of the foreign language."

I honestly wish I had time to. I'm too busying working to attend courses. It would be nice to, but time, tide and translations wait for no man.

One of my areas of expertise, linguistics, which was my field of graduate study. Another area is botany, which I've studied for 7 years as a hobby.

However, my main area is medicine and public health, and I haven't had courses in the biomedical fields. My second job in my professional career was working in-house for an office that specialized in biomedical research. My job was to produce books in technical and scientific fields, mostly with multiple contributing authors, which involved both translating and editing. My boss used to coach me every morning for about an hour before the workday began. He was a good teacher and I learned a lot from him.

My main speciality is aviation, and consecutively translating all aviation related courses: Avionics, Mechanics, Ground Crew, Flight Crew, Pilots... This means, that before the interpreting mission I sometimes get to sit-in on other courses to obtain the necessary knowledge.

On the whole, a very interesting job.

Regards to all,

Nigel.

One of my areas of specialisation is optics (for which I have a degree and several years of working experience).

To keep my knowledge about the industry fresh, I've just been to a professional fair in Germany where I attended some of the technical talks given by companies and research institutes. For me it's been a mixture of meeting potential customers, learning about the current state of the industry and bumping into former colleagues.

Very interesting, although a great investment in time, money and effort. But I think that it's worth it, as it keeps me connected to the "real world" of the customers using my translations.

Lots - but not exactly 'courses' in the sense of the word that everyone is referring to in this poll.

I'm a tech translator so I've been asked to attend product orientations for control devices, 2-day training sessions for grinders (which I completed in half a day) and other machine tools, factory tours for familiarization with industrial robots, etc.

I also taught a 'technical English' course myself at Mitsubishi Motors, half of which involved visits to a cast iron foundry, machining lines and assembly lines and chatting with other engineers.

I used to visit the factories of a manufacturer of prepress and printing systems almost every other day for about 5 years,

I've also visited R&D centers and talked with engineers about particular projects before I started them.

I've programmed machining centers, performed particular procedures in manuals that the client thought were difficult to understand, and basically got my hands greasy and grubby through on-the-job training.

Nothing actually beats seeing and touching what you translate.

I've even taught a couple

I have a degree in computer science (granted it's 11 years old now) and I have just one more course to complete my second degree in business administration. I've also participated in several online courses on everything from Facebook marketing to game theory. They don't all have to do with fields that I work on, I'm just passionately curious.
