18,000 > 28,000 Feb 2, 2015

About 18,000 source words/28,000 target words (I work in a language pair in which there is a large expansion). There has been quite a slow start to the year for me.

>200,000 in 32 days???!!! Feb 2, 2015

So far, of 96 respondents, 11.5% claim they have translated OVER 200,000 words so far in 2015!!! Considering we're only 32 days into the year, this is mind boggling!

I haven't a clue! And I actually find the question irritating. It would take me at least half an hour to work out and I have more pressing things to do with my time.

New Feb 2, 2015

In recent months, potential new clients asked me how many words I had translated in the years before. Very detailed, per field of expertise.

Is this a new trend? I could only offer some estimates.

I haven't got time to count the words, I just get on with the job.
Agencies do the word count, I only count the jobs for my direct clients.

I couldn't care less Feb 2, 2015

As long as work keeps flowing in during the traditionally quiet summer months of the Southern Hemisphere.

Over 200,000 Feb 2, 2015

But these are source characters and almost all of the stuff was technically related with lots of repetitions done with a famous CAT beginning with "t" and ending in "s".

Being a J>E translator, final word count has absolutely no relevance to me. It's source characters, source characters.

Like Monica says, if the work keeps on flowing in, that's all that matters.

I could find out, but don't have the time, so I thought of the same (not very accurate) method as did Phillipe. And with the same result.

I'm amazed Feb 2, 2015

that so many people claim they don't know/care how much work they did in January.

You must have records for your invoices; you must count words for your quotes and to plan your workload; at the very least you must have a vague idea of how many words you normally translate per day/week and how busy you've been; it's pretty basic maths.

After converting hours of editing and copywriting into words of translating, I did about 40,000.
