I got my rates, sometimes there can be a bit og negotiation. I mean: for one job rates cannot be changed, for long term cooperations there can be a (little) negotiation, or more frequently a discount for a specific amount of pages/words.
it has happened that some clients had their own rates, then it was up to me to accept or not, and in same cases I found the rates fair.

Similar to Gianluca, I sometimes set my rates myself and sometimes rates are offered by the customer and I chose to accept or reject.

And I agree with Gianluca: there are clients out there whose rates are perfectly fair. (Much higher than the rates some translators charge in my language pair nowadays)

I believe that rates are determined by the market.

Alas, it is not we who set our rates. With the crises my rates have fallen more than 50%.

A price is nothing without clients consent. However, I think we, translators, must have a clear idea of the value of our work.

Sometimes clients ask me what it will cost to undertake a certain project.

Sometimes, depending on the document, I translate if for very cut rates, but that decision is *always* mine, and is usually related to personal documents from WWII. ▲ Collapse

I'm a freelancer. Where I live there are many translators English Spanish but not many German Spanish translators, so its a question of the market situation at one given moment. But apparently my fees are not too high as I never have to negotiate with the client, in the case of german-spanish it must be easier and less expensive to accept my fees than to have to contact someone outside the city, I guess.

..seeing that 60% of us believes we set our own rate. I used to charge 0.12 Euro per word, but last year I had to lower my rate. Globalisation is not my friend.

Me, the market and translator organizations.
But it's not that easy... we are always negotiating rates.
Some clients, who are part of the market, offer hilarious rates. Some 'translators' accept those rates.

I mus abide by pricelist set in Official Gazette of Montenegro by Ministry of Justice.
But I increased my prices for the market at 0.60-0.65 Euro cts per word
