How-to: Inserting placeables in OmegaT

Since version 3.0.1, OmegaT has a feature whereby certain types of placeables can be inserted into the translation using a dropdown list of options that is called using a single keyboard shortcut.

OmegaT calls this feature its "auto-completer", but it is not actually an auto-completer, as it is in no way automatic -- you have to press a keyboard shortcut every time you want to use it. What's more, OmegaT's "auto-completer" can insert mostly only content that the user has set up in advance (i.e. it doesn't, for example, offer to insert content that is harvested from the TM or from reference files).

To trigger the "auto-completer", simply press Ctrl+Space. This will result in a dropdown list at the cursor, from which you can choose a placeable. If your cursor is at the start of the segment, or is preceded by a space, the dropdown list shows all available placeables of that type, but if your cursor is preceded by characters that match some of the placeables, then only the matching placeables are shown in the list, making it faster to select.

Four types of placeables can be inserted using Ctrl+Space:

* tags
* glossary matches
* specified phrases
* individual characters

If you've pressed Ctrl+Space, and the wrong type of placeable is shown (e.g. if you want to insert a tag but the list contains glossary items) simply press Ctrl+Space again to go to the next list, or use Ctrl+PageUp and Ctrl+PageDown to go to the previous or next list.

None of this is documented in the OmegaT user manual yet, so please let me know if I've missed something or wrote the wrong thing.

Samuel

OmegaT's "auto-completer"can also be used to insert characters from a character map. If you haven't set up a custom list of characters, OmegaT will show you a grid with scroll bars that you can select the character from. For example, if you want to type the "copyright" symbol, you can press Ctrl+Space once or twice until the character map is shown, then scroll to the "copyright" symbol, and click it to insert it into the target text field.

If you regularly use certain characters, you can add them to the custom list of characters. [For geeks, the custom list is stored in the omegat.prefs file.] You can add a character to the custom list multiple times (so that you can group them together), unless you select "allow unique characters only".

If a segment has glossary matches (that you can see in the Glossary pane), then you can use OmegaT's "auto-completer" to insert words from the glossaries. Unfortunately you can't type the source text term and expect OmegaT to match it up with the translation of that term, so you'll have to glance at the Glossary pane to see what the matched term's translation is, and then start typing it before the "auto-completer" recognises the term.

If the cursor is at the start of the segment, or if there is a space before the cursor, then the glossary list of placeables will show all glossary matches. If there are letters before the cursor, then OmegaT will show the glossary matches that match those letters.

Inserting custom words and phrases using OmegaT's "auto-completer"

The "autotext" option of OmegaT's "auto-completer" works very similar to the autocorrect feature in MS Word... except that it is not automatic -- you have to press Ctrl+Space to trigger it. OmegaT can load a list of abbreviations, words and phrases from a file, and you can insert those phrases into your translation.

For example, you can tell OmegaT to replace the short term "bb" with the long term "Blue Board". Or, you can add "Blue Board" as both short term and long term, and then you can use OmegaT to insert "Blue Board" after you've typed only "Blue". However, if you then type "Blue Bo", then OmegaT will not match it up with "Blue Board" because OmegaT can only match up to one typed word (but it can *insert* multiple words).

If the cursor is at the start of the segment, or if there is a space before the cursor, then the autotext list of placeables will show all autotext entries for that segment. If there are letters before the cursor, then OmegaT will show the autotext matches that match those letters.

The default autotext list (to which you can add) is saved as a file named omegat.autotext, but you can save (and load) your own autotext lists as plain text files. OmegaT will always use the autotext list file that you had used previously, except if it can't find that file, in which case it will use its default autotext list.

You can insert tag groups Dec 4, 2013

Another interest of this auto-completer view is that it presents "tag groups" to insert. For instance, if you have
This is the <f0><f1><f2>house</f0></f1><f2>, you will be able to insert in a single operation <f0><f1><f2> or </f0></f1></f2>.
