OmegaT latest version 3.0.0 was released. It requires Java version 6 or later, while the standard version 2.6.3 requires Java version 5 or later.

Compared with 2.6.3, 3.0.0 brings 27 enhancements and five bug corrections.
Thanks to the new license, OmegaT 3 integrates directly tokenizers (with automatic detection of the tokenizers needed, no launching parameters are needed anymore) and LanguageTool, which were previously only available as plugins. This means also that these two features are now available in the Java WebStart version.
To use OmegaT 3, the Tokenizer and LanguageTool plugins should be removed from the plugin filter.
Three important areas of OmegaT were improved.
Better tag handling
Tags are now protected against edition (this behaviour is switchable). In addition, OmegaT now respects protected text (which cannot normally be edited) in the XLIFF filter.
Tags are handled like words, which means selecting them and moving around them is easier.
New options allow inserting the missing tags in a given segment. The Validate Tag window has a more explicit display, can fix tag errors automatically and can be triggered after each segment. Creating Translated Documents can be forbidden if tags are damaged or missing.
For OmegaT XML filters, a tooltip displays the full content of a tag when hovering over it with the mouse.
Better leveraging between XLIFF and TMX
To allow better leveraging between XLIFF and TMX, the way the XLIFF filter computes tags was changed completely. Tagged content should now give the same tag shortcuts in an XLIFF or in a TMX file. As the XLIFF filter was changed significantly, a “2.6 compatibility” option was added in the XLIFF filter, to allow using the new version without having to validate tags again in existing translations.
In addition, a number of global options in File Filters allow to get better leveraging: it is now possible to remove or not leading and trailing tags, to remove or not leading and trailing spaces in non-segmented projects (useful for pre-segmented content) and to preserve spaces for all tags. These options apply to the OmegaT XML and HTML filters.
New search options
It is now possible to search into memory, translation memory and glossaries separately or together, and to search only translated segments.
OmegaT now has a machine translation connector for MyMemory.
The list of last changes can now be read directly in OmegaT, from the menu Help > Last Changes.
The Basque, Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Turkish localisations were updated to 3.0.0.

Why does OmegaT not remove it for you?

Tag protection is enabled by default, and you can disable it. The tag protection does not protect tags completely -- it just protects it against certain types of breakage. With tag protection enabled, this is how it works:
* If you select text, and your selection contains a partial tag, then you can't delete, backspace, or overtype. If you select text, and your text contains tags, and all of the tags are fully included in the selection, then delete, backspace or overtype will work.
* If you delete text without selecting it first, then your delete or backspace key will stop working as soon as you hit a tag. If you want to delete a tag without selecting it first, use Ctrl+backspace or Ctrl+delete.

This sounds like a cool feature but it is actually not that exciting. It inserts the "next" tag, yes, but what is the "next" tag? The next tag is the first one from the start of the list of tags. What this means is that if you have this source text:
The {tag1}rain{tag2} in {tag3}Spain{tag4}
and you have a target language in which the last word must be typed first, and you type this:
{tag3}Spanje
and then use that shortcut, it will not insert {tag4}, but {tag1}. Using the shortcut repeatedly will not toggle between {tag1}, {tag2} and {tag4} either, but will simply insert them one after the other.
The Validate Tag window ... can fix tag errors automatically...
It does so by simply adding all the missing tags, so it doesn't "fix" any errors really -- it simply does something that make the segment no longer trigger the tag error message.

Because it takes time and resources to do it which were, in our opinion, better used on something else.

True... right-clicking inside a segment gives all available tags as options that you can choose from.
This does prove my point in the other thread about having to use the mouse in OmegaT, though. On the other hand, I have no idea how other translators deal with tags in other CAT tools. I have onlyl my own experience, and I use my keyboard, and I can't imagine anyone doing anything else if they have the option to do so, but... I may be wrong.
