Any operating system provides a read-only function

I wonder why nobody has mentioned the standard read-only function of Windows' file system as yet.
Right-click the file in Explorer, choose properties and look at the Read-Only checkbox. If that box is checked there is no way to get rid of the read-only message.
Apart of that one has to bear in mind that Word tries to protect the user from data loss. In order to do that Word keeps hidden copies. So the file should be renamed (while Word is not running) in order to get ri... See more
