Coulter's Candy Jul 7, 2014

This is one song I remember as a lullaby from childhood. The lyrics are on Wikipedia:

Although I prefer a female voice myself, this Hamish Imlach version is avilable on youtube:

About Duerme Negrito Jul 26, 2015

Wonderful post Clarisa. I only now have seen the forum. Duerme negrito and Drumi, Mobila might be from two different sources. To start with Bola de Nieve sang both versions. Duerme Negrito was first written down and put to music by Ernesto Grenet in Cuba in the 1930's. Bola de Nieve himself wrote Drumi, Mobila in 1938 in Ramón Guirao's book "Orbita de la poesía afrocubana, 1928-37: antología", published by Ucar, García y Cía in Havana. Although neither Ernesto Grenet nor Bola de Nieve attributed the songs to anyone else they could very well be based on popular lullabies from 19th century Havana. Drumi, Mobia is in Bozal, a historic afrocuban Spanish-based creole language that seems at least partly influenced by my native Papiamentu language from Curaçao, also in the Caribbean. By the time Atahualpa collected the song on the Venezuelan-Colombian border it could have been brought from Cuba or Mexico, either from one of the versions from Bola de Nieve or Grenet (both were successful hits in Cuba and Mexico before Atahualpa collected it) or from popular versions sung by migrants from Cuba.Collapse

The one I used to sing to my daughter Jul 26, 2015

It's Russian, from the popular and beloved children's TV show Спокойной ночи, малыши! / Good Night, Little Ones!:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=287i6iOYtlw

In English:

The tired toys are sleeping,
And books are sleeping too,
The blankets and the pillows
Are waiting for you.
Even the Fairy tale is going to bed,
So she can visit us in our dreams.
Let's wish her sweet dreams.
Baju- Baj

In a fairy tale you can ride the Moon
And rush over the rainbow on horseback,
You can make friends with a baby elephant,
And catch a Fire-bird's feather,
Close your eyes,
Baju-baj...

Baju-baj, everybody has to sleep at night
Baju-baj, tomorrow will be a new day,
Now we are very tired,
Let's say "Good night" to everyone.
Close your eyes,
Baju-baj...

I guess this is the most famous lullaby in Italy

Ninna nanna, ninna oh,
questo bimbo a chi lo dò?
Lo darò alla Befana
Che lo tiene una settimana
Lo darò all'Uomo Nero
Che lo tiene un anno intero
Lo darò all'Uomo Bianco
Che lo tiene finché è stanco
Lo darò alla sua mamma
Che lo mette a far la nanna!

ENGLISH:
Lullaby, lullaby,
Whom I will give this little baby to?
I will give it to the Befan

who will keep it a week long
I will give it to the Black Man
who will keep it a full year
I will give it to the White Man
who will keep it until it's tired
I will give it to its mommy
who will make it fall asleep!

And my beloved daddy used to sing this to me (in Italian it sounds better, though - LOL) :

Fate la nanna coscette di pollo (x3)
nanna ninna ninna na

ENGLISH:
Sleep little chicken thighs (x3)
lulla-lulla-lullaby!

which ALWAYS made me fall asleep until the next day
