I admit I have been guilty of it myself, don't ask why.

But it is quite amazing how carefully you have to look at some people's profiles, websites etc. before they actually reveal which languages they translate from and into.

It came to my attention early in my career - someone from a medium-sized firm found me in the local phone book, which had the bare essentials, just the free entry. It did not mention languages unless you edited the entry and paid.

He wanted translations into a handful of languages and fast. He was quite amazed when I said I only translate into English and needed a day or two for that.

'But it says in the phone book you're a translator?! I thought translators could do this kind of job...'
I recommended my favourite agency, but I don't know whether he followed it up.

Clients can sometimes be forgiven if they know more about their own business than ours, but before we get to the reliable and meticulous, cultural knowledge, subject specialisms and all that... we should just mention which source and target we work with.
