A friend sent me a link to another letter on this site. Naturally, I had to start scrolling down to read other letters, and got no further than the one by Ken Kesey, What a World (September 17, 2012), which led me to place the link here.

What a letter, what a piece of writing; given me enough food for thought to last a week.

I regret to say, if you are trying to get any work done at all, that there are, on this site, links to two sister sites, "Lists of Note" and

I regret to say, if you are trying to get any work done at all, that there are, on this site, links to two sister sites, "Lists of Note" and "Letterheady."

Fortunately (for me), I've got time today, so am heading back to read more letters and lists. Can't read just one.

Thank you Sep 20, 2012

That is a beautiful letter. Would that I could write so well; would that I never have reason to write those things.

Some Mae West quotes Sep 20, 2012

The letter from Mae West is very funny.

Some more of Mae West:

"Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before."

Man: do you believe in love at first sight?
Mae West: Well, I don’t know, but it saves a lot of time.

And of course the famous

"Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

and...

"I only like two types of men. Domestic and foreign."

Yes, there is a quotation I can't remember Sep 20, 2012

Something about there being no greater sorrow than to outlive your child.

I don't know any language which has a word for it either. We have widows and orphans, but if you lose your child, you're not anything.
I have seen a word in French "mamange", a contraction of maman and ange (Mummy and angel), but only in fora on Internet, don't know whether it has made the dictionary yet

"Mamange" Sep 20, 2012

Hi, I'm French and I've never seen that term "mamange" before. I didn't understand it untill you wrote the "definition" in brackets and, honestly, it still doesn't make much sense to me. That word is not in the dictionnary yet and it'll most likely take a while before it arrives there...

Response to the Ken Kesey letter Sep 21, 2012

A colleague emailed me with a poem that they thought of after reading that letter:

On My First Son
Ben Jonson
Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy;
My sin was too much hope of thee, loved boy;
Seven years thou wert lent to me, and I thee pay,
Exacted by thy fate, on the just day.
Oh! could I lose all father, now! for why,
Will man lament the state he should envy?
To have so soon 'scaped world's, and flesh's rage,

Oh! could I lose all father, now! for why,
Will man lament the state he should envy?
To have so soon 'scaped world's, and flesh's rage,
And, if no other misery, yet age!
Rest in soft peace, and, asked, say here doth lie
Ben Jonson his best piece of poetry;
For whose sake, henceforth, all his vows be such,
As what he loves may never like too much.

I couldn't do it Sep 21, 2012

I'm sorry. The Kesey letter was too much for me. I couldn't even make it halfway through ;___;

There is, unbelievably, in the end, redemption.
