Dear All,

The very south-western nook of Poland, squeezed in between Germany and the Czech Republic, was hit by flash flooding during the weekend, along with its Czech and German neighbours. Within 12 hours the small town of Bogatynia (18,000 residents) and the neighbouring villages were first flash-flooded by the torrential rain in the morning and then hit by the water from a burst dam in the afternoon. That is the result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMgV2irkXDQ

The only truck access to the town is through Germany now, as the roads from Poland are all completely devastated by water and the road via the Czech Republic can carry only light vehicles due to flood damage. At present the military deliver supplies to the town via a helicopter airbridge, but this won't last forever. How to rebuild a town which you cannot access with heavy machinery? 18,000 people in the town and several thousand more in the nearby communities are calling for aid. No drinkable water, no sewage system, no roads, no food, half of the town without electricity... and bread and bottled water sold at 10x the usual price as bringing them in is a heavy problem. Twelve buildings collapsed during the flooding, 22 others are already diagnosed fit for demolition only, and the structural engineers will long remain busy assessing the rest.
The community will need piles of money to reconstruct the ruined infrastructure – miles and miles of power lines, sewage systems, water lines… But first they’ll need roads to carry the debris away. The residents also need to survive till that time…

No wonder that the town is calling for any aid available. They have two bank accounts to receive donations.
In both cases, the accounts holder is Urzad Miasta i Gminy Bogatynia [=Town and Community Office], and the bank name is Łużycki Bank Spółdzielczy w Lubaniu, SWIFT/BIC: POLUPLPR
Account IBAN numbers:
For EUR: PL 82 8392 0004 3900 2059 2000 0300
For PLN: PL 55 8392 0004 3900 2059 2000 0010
(The account denominated in PLN will also accept any other foreign currency, but it will be automatically converted into PLN at a fee)
All donations should be marked in Polish as “Pomoc dla Bogatyni” (Aid for Bogatynia)

Caritas Poland and Polska Akcja Humanitarna [Polish Humanitarian Action], two large charities, have also set up aid accounts - you can find the respective numbers here:

I live at the doorstep to the devastated region and I do care… I can only hope that you do, too.
My sympathy also goes to the ruined Czech and German towns which I’ve visited so many, many times – we’re in it together, dear friends.
