Rome Metro Jul 19, 2010

I should have added that while the Rome Metro offers limited coverage of the whole city, it does link Termini, the Colosseum and the Vatican, so being close to the Piazza di Spagna station can save a lot of time.

Ostia antica excavations Jul 19, 2010

Hello again Madeleine,

I have another suggestion, combining historical sightseeing, the seaside and maybe a concert:

Ostia antica excavations are only 30 minutes by metro from town.

There is plenty to see, and you can also take a bus or hop back on the train for a couple of stops to reach the seaside (Ostia) for a nice pizza or a delicious ice-cream!

The Roman amphiteater hosts some wonderful events in the evening (ballet, classical, pop...July will be hosting Momix, Chopin and..Patti Smith!) and it is a breathtaking experience to listen to music in these surroundings.

I live close by, so feel free to contact me if you need anything

Ciao

D.

Parco Naturale della Maremma is stunning. It's a one-day trip. You need to get* to Alberese, buy a ticket in the Park's office and a special bus will take you from there to the start of the trails. It only takes several hours to circle the area, even if you're not a big hiker. Disclaimer: went there in late September, so it was perfectly warm, and only that.

*Not sure how easy it is to get there by train. My experience driving in Italy (outside of Rome and Milan) was very good. Rome was an absolute nightmare, of course, but all we had to do there was drop off the car and continue by public transport. The car was an almost new Grande Punto, cheap to rent, good in the mountains.

Why not have a day in Ljubljana? Jul 19, 2010

If you go to Venice (as someone suggested here), it is only another 4 hours by train to the Slovenian capital, a city that is a lot calmer than Rome and often underrated but which has a thriving student population and plenty of things to do in and around. It is not a place I know but definitely one I intend to visit some day.

Would not recommend the trip from Rome though, as your timetable is quite tight as it is - it appears to be some 9 hours away by train. Maybe your next trip... Adria Airways have a flight from London.
