Husband is Safe - Thanks for the Outpouring of Support Jan 14, 2010

I just received a voicemail message that my husband James is safe. I tried to call back but the phone reception appears to still be troubled in Haiti. So grateful to God. Thanks for all the support. Time to start helping with the aftermath.

Thanks to all the Prozians who posted and kept us in your thoughts and prayers,

Suzanne

Thank God! Jan 14, 2010

Very glad to hear. Thank God. I can imagine what both of you were going through.
I am terrified of earthquakes... And this one has been so devastating!

That is tremendous news! Jan 14, 2010

I am so happy for you Suzanne!! That is really good news!!

Let's now all pray for those who have not been so lucky. My heart is with the people of Haiti and all the children now in trouble over there. I wonder whether we people with children can do something for them specifically and as a start I have contacted SOS Children's Villages in Spain to see what we can do about it from here. I will keep you posted about what they say.

That's great Suzanne Jan 14, 2010

Among all the devastation, that's great news Suzanne.

I read that right now the best thing is to send money instead of goods.

By now the websites of the banks in Spain have clear information on how to make donations to a large number of ONGs.

Here is a link for anyone who wants it:

http://portal.lacaixa.es/pagos/emergencia_es.html

You can make a donation to the NGO you choose from a credit/debit card, and that card doesn't necessarily have to be a Caixa issued card.

It's so good to hear that you finally could contact your husband. I can imagine how worried you must have felt.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us (to me this takes courage) and it's beautiful to read that our little words somehow helped you a bit.

I have a section called "Announcements" in my blog, which I added lately to include any news about things related to my blog or to any other topic I choose, and last night I added two links related to how to contribute to Haiti. Copying/pasting them here:

www.yele.org/ (in English, the one I previously made reference to)

Un abrazo,

How wonderful for you both Jan 14, 2010

This must be a great relief for you.

All our best,

I feel so relieved. Thanks so much for posting ways to help. Thank you to Tomás for posting that we need to keep focussed on the relief effort. Please give to the Red Cross if possible - www.redcross.org. If you know anyone looking for relatives in Haiti, the Red Cross has a registration site that I just found: http://www.familylinks.icrc.org/haiti/tracingrequest. Many people have been located this way, I just found out about it today.

Some good came out of my personal ordeal that can help others, two publications, out of the blue, want to interview me, which will spread the word and bring in more support.

Thanks again,

Suzanne

A word about donations Jan 15, 2010

This is a terrible tragedy and we should all do what we can to help. However please do NOT donate to YELE if you choose to make a donation to a charity:

"experts say charitable giving should be focused on larger organizations with established emergency relief programs"

(Please read this- http://tinyurl.com/ycdalzb).

Instead I would urge you to PLEASE DONATE to an organisation such as Médecins Sans Frontières. The link if you are in the UK is http://tinyurl.com/y8d4nu7 and for international donations outside of the UK please see http://tinyurl.com/bqv3u .

Another organization, already on the ground in Haiti is the Red Cross. The link for donations to the British Red Cross is http://tinyurl.com/ydqey3s and you can donate to The International Committee of the Red Cross at http://tinyurl.com/yksx759 .

Haiti needs our help. Let's hope that they get it in time.

What the translation industry can do for Haiti Jan 15, 2010

I also came across this article- http://www.milengo.com/what-the-translation-industry-can-do-for-haiti/

It gives some ideas on how translators and interpreters can help, aside from donating to charities.
