True, while an hotel in Bariloche (the South American Switzerland) can cost as little as 8 Dollars per night, if you go to the glaciers area, you may have to pay 60 Dollars for a similar room, but if you cross over to Chile, a luxury hotel in the glaciers area can cost you as much as 500 Dollars per night (the the rates of the Salto Chico Hotel in Torres del Paine). And here comes the information you need to know.
For the last ten months or so, I have been writing in the Spanish Forum on the beauties of Argentina, and of the incredible opportunity of staying at good hotels for 7 to 25 Dollars per night (even less than that at Mar del Plata). However, not all of you understand Spanish, so I have decided to share with you in this Forum valuable information on the travel bargain that Argentina is today for foreign tourists.
Argentina has everything you could ever wish to see. From the train to the clouds in the Northwest, to the Iguazú waterfalls in the Northeast, a European style metropolis like Buenos Aires, which in some aspects resembles Paris, Bariloche (the South American Switzerland), Península Valdez in the Southeast with its whales, penguis and sea liones, Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the world, the Iberá Marshes, the second wildlife protected area of South America and, of course, the magnificent glaciers at El Calafate (the South American Alaska). Without ignoring some beautiful beaches like Cariló, Pinamar, Villa Gesell and even Mar del Plata. All this for a fraction of the cost you would have to spend in other parts of the world.
In this forum we will see the Iguazú Waterfalls, one of the wonders of the world, the Perito Moreno Glacier (the South American Alaska), Bariloche (the South American Switzerland), the Train to the Clouds in Salta, Ushuaia (the Southernmost city of the world) and much more.
THE IGUAZÚ WATERFALLS. ONE OF THE WONDERS OF NATURE.
Just on the border of Brazil and Argentina, and very near Paraguay, as if there were too much beauty for only one country, this magnificent wonder of nature attracts people from all parts of the world.
Surprisingly, Iguazú is one of the most economical destinations of Argentina, provided you buy an all-inclusive package, or that you negotiate the price of the hotel before travelling. During Winter (July and August) and in Easter prices increase considerably, and it is very difficult to find an hotel room.

There are excellent hotels on both sides of the river: The Sheraton in Argentina and the Hotel Tropical (formerly Das Cataratas) in Brazil offer you an excellent panorama of the waterfalls from your hotel room. But keep this in mind: Five-star hotels charge international rates, while a four-star hotel will cost 3 to 4 times less money. For example, the hotel Libertador (3 stars) costs 22 US Dollars per night (the price during April 2004 is up to 42 Dollars including dinner and breakfst, but will fall again next month and increase once more in July), and dinner at this hotel, including wine, costs some 4 US Dollars. I doubt very much if you will find an hotel as good as this one in any other part of the world for 22 US Dollars per night. Here it is:

This glacier, of an incredible beauty, is more than 30 miles long, 200 feet average height, and forms part of a far larger system of glaciers, exceeding 200 miles long.

I have had the chance of visiting Switzerland (not much, but I was at Zermat) and of comparing this country with the beauties of Southern Argentina. They are two completely different styles, both beautiful.
In Switzerland you see the perfection of what man has done in the midst of beautiful sceneries, and in Bariloche in many parts you can see nature it in its primitive state, practically untouched. This is the case of Puerto Blest, where an hotel room including dinner and breakfa... See more I have had the chance of visiting Switzerland (not much, but I was at Zermat) and of comparing this country with the beauties of Southern Argentina. They are two completely different styles, both beautiful.
In Switzerland you see the perfection of what man has done in the midst of beautiful sceneries, and in Bariloche in many parts you can see nature it in its primitive state, practically untouched. This is the case of Puerto Blest, where an hotel room including dinner and breakfast costs some 20 to 25 Dollars per day.
When you go to Puerto Blest, you only find a small hotel (14 rooms), the park ranger´s house, the coast guard offices, the camping, and nothing else. You are in the midst of the forest, and at the side of a beautiful lake, bordered by mountains covered with snow. There is no road for getting there from Bariloche, you have to navigate the Nahuel Huapí lake and the navigation to get there is pure pleasure. When you get up in Summer at 5 in the morning, you can walk along the lake over or under fallen trees, see the wildlife and trout jumping out of the water, and after walking one hour or so you reach some incredibly beautiful waterfalls (Los Cántaros). You may walk an hour or two without crossing a single person in the track in the midst of the woods.

The Train to the Clouds is one of the highest railways in the world, reaching an altitude of 13,000 feet. It is an engineering marvel (see article in the link), and crosses places of incredible beauty.
This is not the only tourist attraction in the Provinces of Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy. However, the standard services of Andesmar are not better than similar standard services of other companies, so make sure to request the first class service, or at least their "coche cama" (sleeping coach).
Cama Total (Expreso Singer) Buenos aires to Iguazú.
As you may see, in Argentina bus services can offer luxury comfort for dimes, if you choose the right class of service...
The cost varies a lot: it is far more expensive from Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata (4 cents of a dollar per kilometer or 6.5 cents per mile, with no meals on board, only a very small snack,) from Buenos Aires to Iguazú you only pay some 30 Us Dollars for nearly one thousand miles (2.5 cents of a Dollar per kilometer or 4 cents per mile, including movies, blanket, pillow, hot meals on board, wine, whisky and champagne.
Normal bus services are only 20 per cent cheaper, so I would not incur in the mistake of saving money on my bus travel...
Welcome to Argentina. If you don´t come now with these bargains, you probably never will.. Take advantage of the exchange rate, while it lasts...

Ushuaia is a beautiful city, practically closed in between the mountains and the sea, it is a place for only staying 3 or 4 days, and combining this tour with a visit to El Calafate (the National Glaciers Park, there are direct flights from Ushuaia to Calafate), and if you have enought time available, for continuing from there to Bariloche.
Hotels are expensive here, you might have to pay as much as 50 Dollars for a single room, but if you check prices on the internet, you may get a better deal. By comparison, a single room in Bariloche costs about 15 Dollars per night, and less than that in Mar del Plata.

La Cumbrecita was founded by German people (the same as Villa General Belgrano, which is some 25 miles away), and until today its architecture is typically Alpine. It is surrounded by foothills, has a very nice forestation, and it is the only town with "only walking" streets I am aware of in Argentina. You are only allowed to drive a car for checking in and out of the hotel. The rest of the time you have to walk, or go for a horse ride.

Being a protected area, it might be difficult to find a place where to stay in the area, but taxis are very cheap in Argentina (I recently paid less than 20 Dollars for a 100 mile round trip), so you might want to go and see it for yourself... In any case, I imagine that some type of arrangement can be made to visit the area.
I have read that the National Park Rangers sometimes accompany the visitors throughout the area on their boats.

The Province of Córdoba is not the most beautiful destination of Argentina, but it is very nice, and is the cheapest destination after Mar del Plata. You can buy an all-inclusive one week tour from Buenos Aires to Carlos Paz for less than one hundred US Dollars, and that includes the round trip on the bus, the hotel, breakfast, lunch and dinner (drinks are not included).
It has a very nice climate, rather warm in the summer and mild in the winter.

From here you have direct buses to Iguazú, Bariloche, Mendoza, Buenos Aires and most of the tourist centers of Argentina. Córdoba has an international airport, and at least Lan Chile and Aerolíneas Argentinas arrive here.

Here are some hotel prices,IN PESOS. To have the equivalent in US Dollars, divide by 2.88. The most expensive hotel in town is costing 35 US Dollars per person for double or triple occupancy and the Hotel Taormina, 3 stars, quite nice, is costing 12 US Dollars per night, including dinner and breakfast.
But you can get better rates if you negotiate them at the front desk.

The scenery is beautiful. The village is small: it has a permanent population of 140 inhabitants, and there is only one bus per day from and to El Calafate. This town was created some 15 years ago, when there was a serious difference with Chile regarding the international limits, which could have ended in a war, but this problem belongs to the past and relations with Chile are now excellent. The Fitz Roy mountain is at a walking distance from the town. However, if you want to climb the Fitz Roy or the Torre mountain, one day may not be enough.
Only one warning: climate changes very rapidly in this area and a storm, or strong winds, may come up at any time. So keep your eyes open and go with adequate clothing and equipment. Protect your camcorders with a case or something. I ruined my camcorder over there. A strong wind came up suddenly (75 miles per hour) and filled my camcorder with sand and small stones.
Hostelling International has hotels here at reasonable rates (in general, in this part of Argentina hotels tend to be more expensive than in other areas). For some 20 to 30 dollars you should be able to get a room with private bathroom.
El Chaltén is some150 miles North of El Calafate. On the road you will also see some glaciers (specially the Viedma glacier). I would also recommend the tour from here to Laguna del Desierto.
